Closing an Academic Year with Raspberry Pis

Incredible. We adopted the Raspi in time for the first day of the Fall semester. But it wasn’t until seeing Rob Bishop, of the Raspberry Pi foundation, speak at a hackspace in dc that I got rolling on the Raspberry Pi Curriculum Project and collaborating toward to RPi guide for students.

It’s been a very successful initiative, and I certainly with I has shared more of it.

THere’s been a lot less collaboration toward these open documents than I had anticipated. That’s disappointing.

I thought ahead enough to make the curricu common core savvy, but missed one thing: the states and districts would be so busy trying to realize their own versions of the common core that no one’s going to pay a bit of attention in order to authorize a new curriculum.

So, back to cisco/comptia/microsoft vendorlock, or do I acclimate them to their hacker overlords?

Secondary School Raspberry Pi Curriculum

planetsedge:

This has been 10-months in the works. It’s not explict maybe until the enrichment reading, but this is for a Raspi-based computing program for students writing or reading below grade level as a result of language-based learning differences.

Shoulda forked it: as Fall 2013 comes closer, I get more anxious without any district approval. So, I made it rely on a Parallel OS book so it complies with cisco’s IT 1.0 program. And I didn’t fork it first.

It’s on git and produced in rST. It’s a work in progress. Wanna collaborate? Please?

signal boost and feedback to: planetsedge.

Raspberry Pi in US Schools? Let’s be a Community

If you’re in a US school where students have their paws on Raspberry Pi computers - or even GNU/Linux in anyway otherwise, please let’s think about being in contact. The UK has a fantastic networked community of educators and technologists, and they’re clearly making some revolutionary progress. If the embed below works (etherpad), please add your self, your school, or other schools rumored to have RPI/linux technologies.

Please signal boost if possible.

My server is getting hammered; please do persevere.

Authentic Assessment and Learning Opportunity: Ubuntu Documentation

As some of you may be aware Ubuntu Documentation is struggling right now when it comes to active contributors well maybe struggling is putting things lig…

Educators seem to love talking about authentic assessment until an opportunity real, valued contributions pop up. Teachers back up with their tail lights blinking. Administrators reinforce the behavior by running from the “open” in open source or the “free” in free culture.

They hunger for real substantive learning. Give it to them real good.

Edtech Appliances for learning and instruction

edistech:

If you have old computers in your school, or have one with a lot of memory that can support virtual machines with a free virtualization platform like VirtualBox, Turnkey Linux @ http://www.turnkeylinux.org has a vast library of “turnkey” appliances: softwares that make installation and configuration a breeze for anyone with admin access to a computer.

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/mahara: digital portfolio platform w/ social networking features. Great for faculty and students alike. Useful for transition services, IEP implementation.

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/statusnet: microblogging for inside a campus. Useful for teaching precision and concision, net citizenship, audience awareness and rhetoric.

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/elgg: social networking for campus - again, training for real world citizenship in the digital ages. Restrict to campus.

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/etherpad: we use for real time collaboration in meetings and composition classes.

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/ for the full catalog of turnkey appliances. There’s a lot of wiki options if you want to encourage authentic writing.

Dusty Raspberry Pi that’s doing pretty much everything around here for me. Up-time is ridiculous (Raspbian, maximally overclocked, class 10 sdhc).

Terra Incognita

Trying Arch Linux for the first time today (great use of vacation) in anticipation of working through it with students. Can’t decide what the better experience would be - Arch or Linux from Scratch. Weigh in?
